The Healthcare and Social Assistance industry is female-dominated, with women holding 82% of jobs in Southwest and South Central Minnesota. However, the number of jobs held by men increased by 3.7 percentage points over the last 17 years. There are several non-traditional Healthcare careers for men, including CNA’s, LPN’s, RN’s, and NP’s. A non-traditional Healthcare career for women are chiropractors, whose median hourly wage is just over $41.

 

Despite economic fluctuations across all industries in the region, Healthcare and Social Assistance providers in Southwest and South Central Minnesota have continually added jobs over the last 20 years, with the exception of the last year. From 2000 to 2019 the region experienced a gain of over 8,000 jobs in Healthcare and Social Assistance for an increase of 34.4%. However, the pandemic-stricken region took a hit in the following year, losing over 1,500 jobs from 2019 to 2020 for a decline of 4.8%.
